At least 34 people were killed and 82 others injured in 33 road accidents across Sylhet division in May, according to a report published by the Sylhet divisional committee of Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA) on Tuesday (June 3).
Among the deceased were 11 pedestrians, 10 motorcyclists and their passengers, and four CNG or leguna drivers and passengers. The data also showed that 27 of the victims were men, three were women, and four were children.
The highest number of accidents occurred in Sylhet district with 18 crashes that left 18 dead and 27 injured. Sunamganj recorded the lowest, with four accidents resulting in four deaths and two injuries. Moulvibazar had five accidents with four deaths and 11 injuries, while Habiganj saw six accidents, claiming eight lives and injuring 42 others.
The report was prepared using information from five local dailies, two national newspapers, online news portals, and accounts from NISCHA’s local branches, said Zahidul Islam Mishu, joint-organizing secretary of the NISCHA central committee and member secretary of its Sylhet divisional committee.
The report further stated that nine drivers were among those killed. Of the total fatalities, 10 occurred in head-on collisions, while five people died in crashes involving trees or electric poles. Two died when vehicles overturned.
In comparison, April saw 30 deaths and 42 injuries from 29 road accidents in the division.
