Bangladesh Election Commission sets roadmap for national polls

The Election Commission (EC) has outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the 13th National Parliamentary elections, featuring 22 key action plans aimed at ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.

The plans include engagement with stakeholders, reforms to electoral laws and regulations, registration of political parties and observer groups, updating the voter list, and setting up polling stations. Most of these initiatives are expected to be completed by October, according to the EC.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said preparations are underway with a target of holding the elections in December.

He also said if voting is scheduled for December, the election timetable will be announced in October.

According to the EC, the roadmap covers a wide range of tasks, including stakeholder dialogues, legal reforms, constituency demarcation, voter list updates, and logistical preparations such as printing manuals, posters, and identity cards.

The Commission also plans to adapt transparent ballot boxes, finalize the election budget, and facilitate the participation of both domestic and international observers and journalists.

Other components of the plan involve the installation of digital equipment, coordination with government ministries, security arrangements, training programmes, public awareness campaigns, and enhancing telecommunications systems to support the electoral process.

The EC will also focus on ICT support and mechanisms for disseminating preliminary results.

In the run-up to the elections, the Commission has already started updating the voter list and initiated the registration process for political parties.

Activities to revise constituency boundaries, register observers, and establish polling centres will follow once relevant legal amendments are completed.
