Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the interim government, has underscored the need for lasting unity, calling Eid a day to strengthen national solidarity.
Speaking before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the National Eidgah Maidan on Monday (March 31), Professor Yunus extended greetings on behalf of the nation.
"Eid Mubarak. Today, Eid congregations are being held in villages, towns, and cities across Bangladesh. On behalf of the nation, I extend my wishes to those attending and those unable to join," he said.
He also conveyed Eid greetings to expatriate Bangladeshis, acknowledging their hardships throughout the year.
"Many of our fellow Bangladeshis abroad may not be able to join Eid prayers. We have not forgotten them. We also extend our wishes to those in hospitals and others unable to participate," he added.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made in building the nation, he urged prayers for those who had lost their lives or struggled for the country’s progress.
"Let us seek forgiveness for their souls and pray for those injured or deprived of a normal life due to their sacrifices," he said.
Highlighting the essence of Eid, Professor Yunus called it a day of unity, love, and reconciliation.
"May we embrace this day with deep affection and extend this message to all. Today, we aspire to forge an unbreakable unity, not just for the moment but for the future."
He further expressed hope that the spirit of togetherness would endure. "We pray that the closeness we feel today becomes permanent, that we continue to move forward as a united nation."
Recalling those who had sacrificed for a new Bangladesh, he urged resilience in the face of challenges. "Despite all obstacles, we will build a new Bangladesh as a united nation, InshaAllah."
Earlier, Professor Yunus arrived at the National Eidgah Maidan, where he was welcomed by high-ranking government officials. The Power and Energy Advisor accompanied him.
The Eidgah Maidan accommodated 35,000 worshippers, including senior government officials. Following the Chief Advisor’s remarks, prayers were held for the peace, prosperity, and well-being of the nation. Islamic sermons had been delivered at the site since early morning.
Later in the day, Professor Yunus is set to exchange Eid greetings with people from various walks of life at his Tejgaon office at 4 pm.
