Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has expressed regret over his recent remarks on the use of the word "rape," following widespread discussions and criticism.
In an official statement issued on Monday (March 17), the DMP commissioner clarified his comments, saying, "While discussing violence against women and children, I referred to rape as part of a broader spectrum of abuse. If my statement has caused offense or hurt anyone, I sincerely regret it."
The statement, signed by Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Talebur Rahman, followed backlash over the commissioner's remarks at a recent event.
During a program on Saturday, Commissioner Sajjat Ali had suggested that media outlets refrain from using the word "rape," arguing that it sounds "unpleasant."
He said, "I strongly dislike the word 'rape.' I request you not to use it. Instead, use terms like 'violence against women' or 'repression of women.' Even the law is called the 'Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.' Let's avoid words that sound unpleasant."
His comments sparked widespread debate, drawing criticism from rights activists, journalists, and the general public.
