Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has returned the body of Wasim Akram, a 28-year-old Bangladeshi youth who was shot dead by BSF personnel near the Baghadanga border in Maheshpur upazila, nearly three months after the incident.
The handover took place on Saturday (July 5) near main border pillar 60, in the presence of officials from both the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF, along with police representatives from both countries.
The body was received by Wasim’s father, Ramzan Ali, and elder brother, Mehedi Hasan, and later buried at the family graveyard in Baghadanga village.
According to a press release issued by Munshi Imdadur Rahman, Assistant Director and Acting Quartermaster of the Maheshpur 58 BGB Battalion, the handover followed months of communication and coordination between the BGB and the BSF, after the victim's family formally requested the return of the body.
Wasim Akram was reportedly shot dead by BSF personnel on April 11, with locals later spotting his body lying on the Indian side of the Ichamati River.
His father identified the body from the Bangladesh side and appealed to the BGB for assistance. The BSF later recovered the body and handed it over to Indian police authorities.
The family expressed relief and gratitude to the BGB for their sustained efforts in securing the return of the body.
