Members of law enforcement agencies arrested five suspects in connection with the murder of BNP activist Mokbul Hossain in Rajshahi’s Durgapur upazila.
The arrests were made in Cox’s Bazar early Sunday (May 11) by an operation team from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5.
The detainees are Md. Alamin, 35, Shahidul Islam, 25, Md. Shahabur, 30, Md. Ripon, 25, and Mehedi Hasan alias Batul, 22, all residents of Taripatpur village in Durgapur upazila.
According to a press release from RAB-5 headquarters, the murder stemmed from a dispute linked to an extramarital affair.
On April 13, a woman arrived at a local residence demanding marriage, causing a division among villagers. Tensions escalated, leading to a village arbitration meeting, where the accused allegedly tried to assert dominance but faced resistance from Mokbul and other villagers.
On April 14, at 8:30 PM, the accused reportedly ambushed Mokbul at Amchattar Mor using sharp weapons, iron rods, and sticks. He was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following a murder case filed by Mokbul’s wife, RAB-5 launched an investigation. The suspects had gone into hiding in different locations before being apprehended in Cox’s Bazar. They have been transferred to Durgapur police station, while efforts continue to arrest other fugitives.
