Shakib Al Hasan etched his name into cricketing history in Antigua, becoming the first cricketer to claim 500 wickets and score over 7,000 runs in T20 cricket.
The milestone came during the Caribbean Premier League, where Shakib starred with both ball and bat for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
Coming into the match with 498 T20 wickets, Shakib had struggled to make an impact early in the tournament—managing just one wicket in four overs across his first four matches.
He also went wicketless in the previous game, conceding 16 runs in two overs. But against the Patriots, the 38-year-old all-rounder rediscovered his rhythm, taking three wickets for just 11 runs in two overs.
Shakib’s historic moment came when he dismissed Mohammad Rizwan off the final ball of his first over, after an earlier chance off Rizwan had turned into a six due to a fielder’s misstep on the boundary.
In his next over, Shakib removed Kyle Mayers and Naveen-ul-Haq, sealing his 500th wicket in T20s from 419 innings across 457 matches.
Only a handful of bowlers have more T20 wickets than Shakib: Rashid Khan (660), Dwayne Bravo (631), Sunil Narine (590), and Imran Tahir (554). With this achievement, Shakib joins an elite group—uniquely positioned as the only player to pair 500 wickets with over 7,000 T20 runs.
He further underlined his all-round brilliance with the bat, scoring a vital 25 off 18 balls, including two sixes and a four, coming in at number four. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
In reply to the Patriots’ 133 for 9 in 20 overs, the Falcons secured victory with two balls to spare. With three wins from six matches, they now top the CPL table with seven points.
