Bangladesh recorded a thrilling 3-2 win over Nepal in their second match of the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship at the Bashundhara Kings Arena on Sunday.
Considered the unofficial favourites of the tournament, especially after India’s withdrawal, Bangladesh dominated the first half and held a 2-0 lead before Nepal staged a strong comeback in the second half.
Sinha Jahan Shikha opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a goalmouth scramble. Munki’s run and shot created the chance, and although Nepal defender Ganga Rokaya initially cleared off the line, the ball fell to Shikha, who fired it into the net.
Bangladesh doubled their advantage in the 36th minute when Mosammat Sagarika capitalised on a rebound after Nepal goalkeeper Sujata Tamang failed to hold a cross from Shanti Mardi.
After the break, both teams pushed hard for goals. In the 55th minute, tensions escalated as Sagarika and Nepal’s Simran Rai were both shown red cards following an altercation. Simran had struck Sagarika while trying to stop her run, and Sagarika retaliated, prompting the referee to send both players off.
Nepal pulled one back in the 76th minute when Anisha Rai converted a penalty awarded after Jaynab Bibi Rita fouled Mina inside the box.
In the 86th minute, Nepal equalised through Mina, who guided Purnima’s low cross past Bangladesh goalkeeper Swarna.
With the match appearing destined for a draw, substitute Trishna Rani secured victory for Bangladesh with a decisive strike deep into added time, sparking celebrations among players and supporters.
The result means Bangladesh collected their second win of the tournament, strengthening their bid to reach the final in the absence of regional rivals India.
