Bangladesh ended their seven-match ODI losing streak with a hard-fought 16-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium on Saturday, leveling the three-match series 1-1 and setting up a decider in Kandy.
Chasing 249 for victory, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 232 in 48.5 overs, despite a determined 78 from Janith Liyanage, who threatened to pull off a dramatic comeback for the hosts under the lights.
With 21 runs needed from 16 balls, Mustafizur Rahman removed the well-set Liyanage, before Tanzim Hasan Sakib sealed the win by bowling Dushmantha Chameera for 13 in the penultimate over. The dismissal sparked jubilant celebrations as Bangladesh claimed a much-needed win.
Tanvir’s five-for turns the tide
Sri Lanka made a blistering start to the chase, thanks to Kusal Mendis, who smashed 56 off 31 balls, reaching his half-century in just 20 deliveries. But Bangladesh’s left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam turned the match with a brilliant spell, taking a maiden five-wicket haul in only his second ODI.
Tanvir removed Mendis with a sharp turner that trapped him lbw on review, and then dismissed Kamindu Mendis, Dunith Wellalage, and Maheesh Theekshana to reduce Sri Lanka from 82 for 2 to 170 for 8.
Liyanage, however, battled on, adding a crucial 50-run ninth-wicket stand with Chameera. His 78 off 85 balls — laced with seven fours and two sixes — brought Sri Lanka close before Mustafizur and Tanzim wrapped up the match.
Emon, Hridoy shine as Bangladesh post 248
Earlier, Bangladesh were bowled out for 248 in 45.5 overs after electing to bat. Parvez Hossain Emon led the charge with a fluent 67 off 69 balls, while Towhid Hridoy anchored the middle order with 51.
Bangladesh got off to a flying start, reaching 100 inside 16 overs, but another middle-order collapse followed, caused by poor shot selection and running errors. Hridoy’s run-out shortly after reaching his fifty halted momentum.
A late flourish from Tanzim Hasan Sakib, who struck 33 off 21 balls with two sixes and two fours, helped Bangladesh edge closer to 250. Wanindu Hasaranga (3-43) and Asitha Fernando (3-49) shared six wickets for Sri Lanka.
Series decider ahead
The victory keeps Bangladesh’s hopes alive, setting up a high-stakes series decider in Kandy. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s side will be eager to complete a comeback series win, while Sri Lanka will look to bounce back after dominating the first ODI.
