Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo dismissed the hype framing Sunday’s Nations League final in Munich as a personal showdown with Spain’s 17-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal. 

The 40-year-old captain, a football icon, insisted the match is a team effort, not a duel between generations. “The media loves to amplify these narratives, but it’s Portugal versus Spain, not me against someone else,” Ronaldo told reporters.

Ronaldo, who netted the decisive goal in Portugal’s semifinal win over Germany, praised Spain as “potentially the world’s best national team.” He highlighted their depth, singling out Nico Williams, Pedri, and coach Luis de la Fuente’s disciplined leadership. 

Yamal, fresh off a brace in Spain’s thrilling 5-4 victory over France, has drawn comparisons to a young Ronaldo, who dazzled at 18 for Sporting, earning a move to Manchester United. Yamal, a Euro 2024 champion and Barcelona’s league-and-cup winner, is “very good,” Ronaldo said, urging the media to ease pressure on the teenager. “Let him grow naturally for the good of football.”

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, echoed the sentiment, calling Yamal “mature beyond his years” and unfazed by pressure. “He’s calm, in control, and special,” de la Fuente said, while lauding Ronaldo as a “legend” whose work ethic and resilience set a timeless example.

Spain, unbeaten in competitive matches since March 2023, boasts a formidable record, winning 16 of their last 18 games. Forward Mikel Oyarzabal emphasized their confidence: “We don’t think we’re better than anyone, but we know we can compete with the best.” 

Portugal, the 2019 champions, face reigning 2023 winners Spain in a clash of titans, with both sides showcasing talent and tenacity.
