Novak Djokovic's pursuit of a landmark 100th ATP singles title will have to wait after he suffered a shock defeat to Czech teenager Jakub Menšík in the Miami Open final on Sunday.

The 19-year-old, ranked 54th in the world, produced a stunning display to overcome his childhood idol 7-6(4), 7-6(4) at the Hard Rock Stadium, securing his first-ever ATP title in a historic upset.

The match was delayed due to heavy rain in Miami, which also forced the postponement of the women’s doubles final scheduled earlier in the day.

Despite being the overwhelming favorite, Djokovic was outplayed by the fearless youngster, who fired 14 aces past the Serbian veteran.

At 37, Djokovic became the oldest player to reach a Masters 1000 final but fell short of becoming the oldest champion.

Playing with a nagging eye injury, the 24-time Grand Slam winner struggled to find his rhythm, while Menšík’s power and composure proved decisive.

The Czech teenager remained unshaken under pressure, sealing the win in two tight sets as Djokovic ran out of answers.

With 99 ATP titles, Djokovic remains third on the all-time list in the Open Era, trailing Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103), with Ivan Lendl (94) and Rafael Nadal (92) completing the top five.

An emotional Menšík paid tribute to Djokovic during the trophy ceremony, acknowledging the Serbian’s influence on his career. “Novak, you’re the reason I started playing tennis. There is no greater challenge than facing you in a final. Thank you for everything you’ve done for this sport,” he said.

Djokovic, gracious in defeat, congratulated the young champion. “This is Jakub’s moment. You were the better player today. Unbelievable serving, great mental strength—this is just the beginning for you. Maybe you’ll let me win next time,” he quipped.

Menšík’s triumph sent social media into a frenzy, with fans praising both his performance and Djokovic’s sportsmanship. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “You won’t find a more gracious loser than Djokovic. And the ultimate respect shown by Menšík.” Another described the victory as “the best day of this 19-year-old’s life.”

With his first ATP title now secured, Menšík has announced himself on the global stage, while Djokovic will have to wait for another opportunity to reach his century of titles.
