Lionel Messi made an instant impact in his return to action for Inter Miami, scoring just two minutes after coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union.
The win moved Miami to the top of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference.
Messi entered the match in the 55th minute and wasted no time, scoring in the 57th. He received a pass from Luis Suárez on the right side of the box, evaded two defenders, and slotted the ball into the net with a right-footed shot to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
This goal marked his second in three MLS appearances this season.
Inter Miami's head coach, Javier Mascherano, had initially planned to ease Messi back into action following his adductor injury, which had sidelined him for two World Cup qualifiers with Argentina.
“We wanted Leo to have minutes but not risk further injury,” Mascherano explained. “He feels good, and we’re happy with his performance.”
Messi had also been dealing with a left thigh issue, which he picked up in a match against Atlanta two weeks ago. Despite missing several games, he made a brief but effective return to the field.
The match saw Robert Taylor put Miami ahead in the 23rd minute with assists from Benjamin Cremaschi and Jordi Alba.
Messi's quick goal doubled the lead before Philadelphia pulled one back through Dániel Gazdag in the 80th minute. Inter Miami held on to secure the win.
Next, Inter Miami will prepare for the Concacaf Champions Cup against LAFC on Wednesday, with Mascherano confirming Messi’s participation depends on his recovery in the coming days.
