Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has expressed his gratitude to doctors for their "amazing" care after suffering a cardiac arrest during a domestic T20 match in Dhaka.
The 36-year-old, Bangladesh's all-time leading run-scorer in one-day internationals, experienced chest pains while playing for Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League against Shinepukur on Monday.
Initial plans to transport him via helicopter were abandoned due to his deteriorating condition, and he was instead rushed to KPJ Specialized Hospital for emergency treatment.
Tamim underwent an angioplasty procedure to clear a blocked artery and is expected to remain under observation for another 48 to 72 hours.
Reflecting on his ordeal, he shared an emotional message on social media:
"The heartbeat is what keeps us alive, but it can stop without warning—we often forget this. Did I know what was going to happen when I started my day yesterday?" he wrote on Facebook.
"By the infinite mercy of Allah and everyone's prayers, I have returned. I was lucky to have amazing people around me who worked tirelessly to help me through this crisis."
He added: "Some events remind us of reality—how short life really is. Please pray for me and my family. I, Tamim Iqbal, am nothing without your love."
Tamim, who represented Bangladesh 391 times across all formats between 2007 and 2023, amassed 15,249 runs in his illustrious career.
