Defending Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have appointed experienced top-order batter Ajinkya Rahane as their captain for the 2025 season.

The 36-year-old replaces Shreyas Iyer, who has moved to Punjab Kings after being released by KKR. Meanwhile, seam-bowling all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has been named vice-captain, the franchise announced on Monday.

Expressing confidence in the new leadership duo, KKR chief executive Venky Mysore stated, “We are thrilled to have Ajinkya Rahane as our captain. His experience and composure will be invaluable. Venkatesh Iyer, a core member of KKR, also possesses strong leadership qualities, and together, they will guide us in our title defense.”

Rahane, a seasoned domestic cricketer, previously led India to a historic Test series win in Australia in 2020-21. Excited about his new role, he said, “It’s a privilege to lead KKR, one of the most successful IPL franchises. We have a well-balanced squad, and I look forward to the challenge of defending our title.”

With this appointment, Delhi Capitals remain the only team yet to announce a captain after parting ways with Rishabh Pant, who will now lead Lucknow Super Giants.

KKR will kick off their title defense against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22 at their home ground in Kolkata.
