Eighteen footballers, including members of the SAFF-winning squad, have been left out of the Bangladesh women's national football team following a revolt. In response, head coach Peter Butler has assembled a new squad, relying on young talents to represent the country.
“This is the new team of the new Bangladesh,” Butler remarked ahead of their campaign.
However, their journey began with a setback as Bangladesh suffered a 3-1 defeat in the first of two friendly matches against the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Afeida khandaker-led side struggled in the absence of key players like Sabina Khatun, losing at the UAE Football Association Ground.
Bangladesh conceded early, with Elizabeth giving UAE the lead in the 18th minute. Just two minutes later, Irene’s shot struck the post, denying Bangladesh a chance to level the score.
The hosts extended their advantage in the 28th minute when Georgia found the net, making it 2-0. Bangladesh responded in the 34th minute with a penalty conversion from captain Afeida khandaker, whose powerful strike left the goalkeeper helpless.
Despite creating multiple chances early in the second half, Sultana and Ripa failed to capitalize. UAE sealed their victory in the 74th minute with Georgia’s second goal of the match.
Bangladesh fought to reduce the deficit but could not avoid defeat, leaving the pitch disappointed in their opening encounter under Butler’s leadership.
Before departing for the UAE, Butler had urged patience, cautioning against immediate expectations from the young squad. He emphasized the need for time to develop. Bangladesh will look to bounce back in their second match on March 2.
