An activist affiliated with Awami League, a party currently banned from political activity, has been detained by police in New York for allegedly throwing an egg at Akhtar Hossain, a senior member of Dr Muhammad Yunus’s interim government delegation.

Hossain, who serves as the Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), was targeted at John F. Kennedy International Airport by activists of the Awami League’s US chapter. The incident occurred during the delegation’s presence in the United States.

National Citizen Party's (NCP's) senior joint member secretary Dr Tasnim Jara has said that the party's member secretary Akhtar Hossain came under attack in the United States.

In her Facebook post, she said, "After arriving in the United States today, our party's member secretary Akhtar Hossain came under attack. Eggs were thrown at him, and he was subjected to abusive language."

Besides, exiled journalist Elias Hossain confirmed the arrest in a verified Facebook post at 8:20 am on Tuesday (Sept 23). 

He wrote that police conducted a raid in Jackson Heights and detained an “Awami freedom fighter” allegedly involved in the egg-throwing incident earlier in the day.
