Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Mirza Abbas has called for justice for those responsible for the alleged mistreatment of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during her imprisonment.

Speaking at a special prayer ceremony organized by the BNP at its Nayapaltan office in the city on the occasion of her 81st birthday, Abbas criticized the conditions Khaleda Zia faced while in custody. He described the treatment as “inhumane” and highlighted the denial of proper medical care.

Abbas alleged that her health had deteriorated significantly while she was held at the Old Dhaka Central Jail. "Khaleda Zia was moved from a dilapidated jail building to a hospital, but even there, she was not given proper treatment," he said. He described the building as infested with rats, cockroaches, and lizards and claimed there were suspicions that she had been subjected to slow poisoning.

The BNP leader highlighted Khaleda Zia’s struggles throughout her political career. “Despite numerous obstacles and conspiracies, Khaleda Zia has emerged as one of the most popular leaders in Bangladesh’s political history. Her leadership and determination have made her a target of political vendettas on many occasions,” Abbas said.

He also pointed to the strong public support for Khaleda Zia during her imprisonment, when she was reportedly denied medical treatment. "Even when she was ill, the people of Bangladesh came forward to demand justice for her. Public sentiment continues to call for justice against these injustices," Abbas added.

Reflecting on her political legacy, he said, “Khaleda Zia is an uncompromising leader, and her contributions remain unmatched in Bangladesh and world politics. Those who tried to destroy her are no longer in the country, but she continues to return to lead the people.”

Abbas also criticized the 2008 general elections, claiming they were influenced by internal pressures and conspiracies from rival parties, but said Khaleda Zia always acted in the best interests of her party.

Other BNP leaders attending the ceremony reiterated their commitment to securing justice for the party chairperson, while attendees offered prayers for her well-being and the prosperity of the country.
