JCD, NCP to hold separate rallies in Dhaka today

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) , the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and the National Citizen Party (NCP) are set to organise pivotal rallies in the capital today, marking the anniversary of last year’s anti-fascist uprising.

Chhatra Dal will hold its rally at Shahbagh at 2:30 pm, while the NCP event will begin at 4:00 pm at the Central Shaheed Minar. Organisers expect massive crowds and have urged participants to arrive early.

Both groups have issued apologies in advance for any public inconvenience caused by the gatherings.

In light of the events, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has advised citizens to avoid the Shahbagh area and recommended that HSC, equivalent, and BCS candidates allow extra time to reach their exam centres.

BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, will virtually address the Chhatra Dal rally from London. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior leaders, along with former student leaders, are expected to attend in person.

The rallies mark the first anniversary of last year’s historic anti-discrimination student movement, which led to the resignation of the Awami League government after 16 years in power.

The NCP, born out of that student-led uprising, is holding its rally to commemorate the event and reaffirm its political presence.
