A Dhaka court today placed Jane Alam Apu, an expelled joint convener of Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, on a four-day remand in connection with an extortion case involving the Gulshan residence of former Awami League MP Shammi Ahmed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order after police sought a 10-day remand. Apu, arrested by the Detective Branch from Wari on Friday, was seen crying while being produced before the court.
He was expelled from the student organization on July 26 after allegations surfaced.
Earlier, four other accused from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) were remanded for seven days, while a 16-year-old suspect was sent to the Gazipur Children Development Centre.
The case was filed by Shammi Ahmed’s husband, Siddique Abu Zafar, alleging the accused demanded Tk50 lakh and forcibly extorted Tk10 lakh on July 17.
