No constitutional change outside parliament: Amir Khosru

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today reaffirmed that any amendment to the Constitution must occur within the framework of the Parliament and with the people's mandate.

“There is no scope for constitutional amendments outside parliament,” he said while speaking as chief guest at a memorial meeting marking the fifth death anniversary of former BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Mannan. The event was held at the ICMAB auditorium in Nilkhet, Dhaka.

Amir Khosru noted that discussions about constitutional amendments are ongoing, but stressed that such changes must take place transparently and democratically through parliament. “Every party must seek public support, and any change must be passed by the legislature,” he added.

Criticizing those who, according to him, are trying to obstruct the democratic process and future elections, he said, “They do not believe in democracy or the parliamentary system. They themselves are unsure of what method they will pursue.”

He said the importance of political unity and cultural reform, warning that no reform effort would succeed unless the country’s political culture is changed. “We must learn to respect differing opinions and be tolerant,” he said.

“Each party will have its own ideas, but we must agree where possible and leave the rest to the people. The people are the ultimate authority, and their decision must be reflected in parliament,” he added.
