Jamaat chief undergoes successful bypass surgery

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has undergone successful heart bypass surgery at a private hospital in Dhaka.

The operation began at 8:30 am on Saturday (August 2) at United Hospital in the capital. Renowned cardiac specialist Dr Jahangir Kabir led the procedure.

Confirming the development, Jamaat Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar said, “The surgery began at 8:30am. Alhamdulillah, it was completed successfully. The operation took approximately five hours and five minutes.”

Earlier, on July 19, Dr Rahman fell ill after attending Jamaat’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka. He was immediately admitted to a nearby private hospital, where doctors initially suspected dehydration but found no major complications.

Following two days of rest, he resumed party programmes in Rangpur, Khulna, and Moulvibazar. However, he became unwell again and was hospitalised on Wednesday. Subsequent tests revealed multiple blockages in his heart.

A medical board previously recommended that Dr Rahman seek treatment abroad, but he chose to receive care within the country. He stated that the decision was aimed at restoring public confidence in Bangladesh’s healthcare system.
