Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has been admitted to a hospital for bypass surgery after five blockages were detected in his heart.
He was taken to a private hospital in Dhaka on Saturday morning (August 2), according to party sources.
Senior Jamaat leaders, including the secretary general and nayeb-e-ameer, accompanied him to the facility.
Earlier, on July 19, Dr Rahman suddenly fell ill after attending the Jamaat’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. He was immediately admitted to a nearby private hospital.
At the time, doctors did not detect any major complications but suspected dehydration.
Following two days of rest, he resumed party activities in Rangpur, Khulna, and Moulvibazar. However, his condition deteriorated again, and he was hospitalised on Wednesday. Subsequent tests revealed multiple blockages in his heart.
A previously formed medical board had recommended that Dr Rahman seek treatment abroad. However, he chose to receive treatment within the country, stating that he had decided to restore public confidence in the national healthcare system.
