A Dhaka court today granted a two-day police remand for former Dhaka-7 MP Solaiman Selim in connection with the killing of student Nadimul Hassan Elem during last year’s July student movement in Sutrapur.
Solaiman Selim, son of former MP Haji Md Selim, was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court from jail, where police sought a seven-day remand for further interrogation.
Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi, acting on behalf of the CMM, granted a two-day remand after hearing the prosecution's arguments.
According to the case details, a group of Awami League leaders and activists allegedly attacked an anti-discrimination rally organized by students of Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kobi Nazrul College on July 29, 2023.
During the attack, Nadimul Hassan Elem, a student of Sheikh Borhan Uddin Post Graduate College, was shot and collapsed on the street. He was rushed to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Solaiman Selim was arrested from Dhaka’s Gulshan area on November 14 last year. On August 22, 2023, a case was filed with Sutrapur Police Station over the incident, where Selim was listed as accused number 10.
Police say further interrogation is necessary to identify others involved and uncover the motive behind the attack.
