Fakhrul urges swift elections, warns of instability

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (July 19) urged the interim government to act swiftly to initiate the electoral process, warning that delays are making the political situation increasingly volatile.

Speaking at a discussion titled “Expectations of the Mass Uprising and the Path to Democratic Transition in the Country” at the Jatiya Press Club, Fakhrul said, “It seems the situation is getting more complicated with each passing day. Those who do not believe in democracy or a just society are regrouping again.”

He said the importance of dialogue, tolerance, and respect for differing views, stating that the ideals of the 1971 Liberation War and democracy remain central to BNP’s political philosophy. "We must move forward through meaningful dialogue and initiate elections without unnecessary delay,” he said.

Fakhrul said it had opened a new opportunity for democratic reform. However, he expressed concern that anti-democratic and fascist forces are attempting to reassert themselves.

He said, “If we lose this opportunity, Bangladesh will fall further behind. Each time our youth rise and make sacrifices, we must not waste their efforts through political irresponsibility.”

He called for urgent progress on reforms, the July Charter, and election preparations. “The responsibility lies with the interim government. But the longer the delay, the murkier the situation becomes,” he said.

Fakhrul expressed hope that interim government leader Dr Muhammad Yunus could unite the country.

“We want to take responsibility through elections and build a welfare state. No barrier can stop us if the people are with us,” he added.

Leaders from Ganatantra Manch, Ganosamhati Andolan, Gono Odhikar Parishad, NCP, and the Revolutionary Workers Party were also present at the event.
