Leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League allegedly vandalised and set fire to a police vehicle in Gopalganj Sadar on Wednesday morning (July 16), ahead of a planned march program by the National Citizen Party (NCP).
The incident occurred in the Durgapur Union area, where a police patrol vehicle was attacked amid rising political tensions in the district.
Officer-in-Charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, Mir Md Sajedur Rahman, confirmed the incident.
According to him, “Supporters of the banned Chhatra League, led by its general secretary Ataur Rahman Piyal, vandalised and set fire to a police vehicle in an attempt to disrupt the NCP's programme.”
The NCP had announced a mass march at the municipal park in Gopalganj city as part of its month-long "July March" campaign.
Party convener Nahid Islam and other central leaders were scheduled to join the demonstration.
The programme was widely promoted on social media. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Nahid Islam wrote, “July 16… March to Gopalganj,” signaling the party's intention to proceed despite potential resistance.
Sarjis Alam, the party’s chief coordinator for the northern region, echoed the call, posting, “We are coming! July March, Gopalganj district town, at 11 am.”
In a separate post, Sarjis urged supporters to join the movement, writing: “Fellow fighters of the revolution, come rushing like a comet.”
Authorities have yet to confirm if any arrests were made in connection with the arson attack.
