Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has proposed National Reconciliation Council to resolve divisions within the nation and establish peace while ensuring accountability for crimes.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed made the proposal on behalf of his party on Tuesday (July 15).
He was speaking at an event titled “The Day of Changing the Course of Uprising” organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Dhaka University’s TSC auditorium.
Salahuddin Ahmed said it was essential to bring those involved in crimes to justice. However, he warned that prosecuting thousands could keep the country locked in cycles of trials and revenge.
“There will be no politics under the name of Awami League. As a political party, they must face accountability,” he said, adding “fascist Hasina regime” must be brought under the law.
Salahuddin Ahmed said, “If we prosecute thousands, the nation will remain permanently divided in an atmosphere of retribution. Therefore, a National Reconciliation Council should be formed to establish peace among the people.
The BNP leader further said BNP had submitted “July Declaration” five months ago, and a revised version was provided on July 9.
Salahuddin Ahmed expressed concern about the slow progress of drafting the July Charter.
“We told the Reform Commission it must be finalised before 5 August. But observing the current pace, I wonder whether you will be able to complete this work within the timeframe,” he said.
