A former vice-president of the Jubo Dal’s Khulna Daulatpur unit was shot dead and had his tendons severed by unidentified assailants in front of his home on Friday afternoon.
The incident happened around 2pm in the Maheshwarpasha West Para area of Khulna city’s Daulatpur.
According to police and party sources, Mahbubur Rahman Molla, 50, was cleaning his private car when three men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at him. After he fell to the ground, the attackers cut the tendons of both his legs to confirm his death before fleeing the scene.
Daulatpur Thana BNP General Secretary Imam Hossain confirmed the matter.
He said Mahbubur’s body was later taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal activists, and relatives gathered upon hearing the news.
Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mir Atahar Ali said investigators recovered four spent bullet casings from the site. Senior police officials visited the scene shortly after the incident.
Mahbubur’s wife, who was present inside the house, said she heard gunshots and ran outside, screaming for help. “They were wearing helmets. One of them wore a black check shirt. They fired at the gate while leaving and again in the street. They were cursing, challenging anyone to come out,” she told reporters in tears. She said Mahbubur had recently been receiving threats over the phone. “I told him to go away or let me speak to them, but he said he had harmed no one. He believed nobody would harm him. But I told him this was no way to think.”
Earlier this year, on 18 February, Mahbubur was expelled from the Jubo Dal after he was seen holding a large ram dao during clashes between locals and students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).
Police said efforts were underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
