Former President Abdul Hamid returned to Bangladesh in the early hours of Monday (June 9), a month after leaving the country for medical treatment, amid ongoing controversy over a murder case filed against him.
Abdul Hamid, who served as president under the Awami League government, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thai Airways flight TG-339 at around 1:30 am.
He was reportedly brought down from the aircraft in a wheelchair, according to airport officials.
His immigration process was completed at 1:45 am, though he remained at the airport for some time afterward.
Speaking to BanglaNews24 around 2:45 am, the airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, confirmed the former president’s arrival.
“Former President Abdul Hamid left the airport two minutes ago,” he said.
Abdul Hamid had departed for Bangkok on May 8 aboard Thai Airways flight TG 340, reportedly for medical reasons.
However, his departure drew widespread criticism after a murder case was filed against him in Kishoreganj on January 14.
The case also named several high-profile political figures, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed, and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
The incident sparked outrage nationwide, with questions raised about how the former president was allowed to leave while under investigation.
Subsequently, three police officers were suspended for alleged negligence in connection with Hamid’s departure.
Abdul Hamid has not commented publicly on the case since his return.
