Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, left Dhaka for London this morning to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with her husband and daughter.
She departed for London on a Qatar Airways flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11 am on Thursday (June 5).
Earlier in the morning, Dr. Zubaida left for the airport from her residence in Gulshan after bidding farewell to her family members.
Dr. Zubaida recently returned to Bangladesh after 17 years, alongside BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. She had left the country on September 11, 2008, with Tarique Rahman. Weeks later, on September 26, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against them on charges of possessing wealth disproportionate to known sources.
A Dhaka court sentenced Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison, along with a fine of Tk 3.5 million. However, her sentence was suspended last year following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government amid mass protests.
Dr. Zubaida holds an MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College and later pursued medicine at Imperial College London, where she earned her MSc with record marks and a gold medal.
She had secured the top position in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination in 1995, but before entering the health cadre, she married Tarique Rahman on February 3, 1994.
Dr. Zubaida’s visit to London marks a family reunion after an eventful political year.
