NCP outlines position amid political debates

The National Citizens Party (NCP) has clarified its stance amid the ongoing political discussions and movements in Bangladesh, asserting its role in shaping national debates.

In a statement issued on Monday (May 12), NCP Joint Member Secretary (Office) Saleh Uddin Sifat emphasized the party’s historical and constructive role in recent mobilizations.

He said that while various groups spontaneously joined the anti-fascist student-public movement, certain factions deliberately raised slogans undermining the broader push for national unity.

"The National Citizens Party did not endorse such slogans," Sifat said. "Our stance has always reflected the struggles of 1947, 1971, and 2024, emphasizing national integrity."

The statement also referenced concerns over objections to the performance of the national anthem during demonstrations. Despite differing opinions, protesters upheld the anthem as a mark of determination and solidarity, which the NCP commended.

The party emphasized the importance of recognizing and respecting significant chapters in Bangladesh’s history, saying that a transparent political landscape requires all actors to clarify their positions on the 1971 Liberation War.

The NCP urged participants in the 24 Uprising—which has been at the center of recent protests—to maintain a pro-Bangladesh stance, arguing that political divisions of the past should not hinder future national unity.

Sifat expressed concerns that ideological conflicts have previously fragmented Bangladesh’s political landscape. However, he said that this moment presents an opportunity to foster greater national cohesion.

"The path forward must be built on unity," he said. "The defeat of divisive ideologies can only be achieved through collective action and responsible governance."

The statement called for long-term strategic decisions from all political groups, advocating for a democratic transition driven by foresight and inclusive leadership.
