Cancel AL’s registration, ban activities: NCP Chief National Citizens' Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam

National Citizens' Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has demanded that the Election Commission cancel the Awami League’s registration and impose a ban on its organisational activities.

He made the remarks while speaking at the founding anniversary event of Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party held at the National Press Club on Friday.

Nahid Islam said the key issues in current political discussions are reform, elections, and justice for the Awami League.

He described these three as interconnected and essential for democratic transformation.

He claimed that the people of the country gave their verdict against the Awami League on August 5 and that the party has lost its political right to operate.

"The people will decide their fate either through votes or a mass uprising," he added.

Referring to what he described as a historical mass uprising, Nahid said the public has already rejected Mujibism and the Awami League.

“Fearing public anger, their leaders have fled the country. So, they no longer have any moral right to continue in politics,” he said.

He urged the authorities to use legal means to remove the party from the political field.

“The Awami League’s registration must be cancelled and its activities must be banned without delay,” he said.

Stressing the need for reforms, Nahid said every political party is now calling for changes.

“Only through fundamental reforms can the path to governance and peaceful transfer of power be ensured,” he said.

On elections, he noted that political disputes have always surrounded the voting process. He said peaceful power transfer requires not just rules but also the goodwill of political parties, changes in political culture, and mutual trust.

“Without these,” he warned, “peaceful handover of power is not possible.”
