Jamaat chief Joins workers' rally in Dhaka on May Day

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman  joined a large workers’ rally at Paltan More in the capital today (May 1), marking International Workers' Day.

The rally was organised by the Bangladesh Workers' Welfare Federation, a labour wing affiliated with the party. Thousands of supporters and activists, including leaders from the central and metropolitan units, gathered at the event.

Rahman addressed the crowd as the chief guest, highlighting workers' rights and the need for unity between labour forces and leadership in the face of economic and social challenges.

Senior Jamaat leaders, including Nayebe Ameer Professor Mujibur Rahman and Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar—both former members of parliament—also attended the event. The rally was presided over by the federation’s president and ex-MP Maulana ANM Shamsul Islam.

Speakers at the rally called for better wages, safer working conditions, and policy reforms to protect the interests of workers across the country. They also criticised the current government for what they described as neglect of labour issues.

May Day is observed annually in Bangladesh and around the world to commemorate the historic struggle for workers’ rights and to honour those who fought for an eight-hour workday.
