Consensus on reforms required before elections: Jamaat Ameer

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that the upcoming national election should only proceed after implementing key reforms, ensuring justice for past atrocities, and establishing a proper electoral framework.

He emphasized that without consensus among political parties on these issues, the election could face further delays.

Speaking at a press conference in Dhaka today (April 17), Dr. Rahman highlighted the necessity of visible and acceptable reforms, which have been submitted to the Reform Commission.

He warned that without these changes, any forthcoming election might lack democratic legitimacy.

Dr. Rahman also underscored the importance of initiating trials for those responsible for past violence, asserting that such actions are crucial for restoring public trust and honoring the victims.

He clarified that while the trials need not conclude before the election, their commencement is essential.

Furthermore, he called for mutual respect among political parties, urging an end to the mindset where elections are deemed fair only when one's own party wins.

He advocated for collective engagement from the government, political entities, and civil society to foster a conducive environment for fair elections.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also expressed a preference for holding the national election before the upcoming Ramadan, citing potential challenges posed by the monsoon season and natural disasters if delayed further.
