Khaleda Zia celebrates Eid with family after nearly a decade

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with her family in London after nearly a decade, marking an emotional reunion.

The 79-year-old leader spent the day at the residence of her eldest son, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, surrounded by her family, including her two daughters-in-law, Dr. Zubaida Rahman and Syeda Sharmila Rahman, and her three granddaughters, Barrister Zaima Rahman, Zafia Rahman, and Zahia Rahman.

This is the first time since 2017 that Khaleda Zia has celebrated Eid with her family in London.

On that occasion, she had traveled to the UK for medical treatment and celebrated Eid-ul-Azha at her son’s house. Prior to that, she had also celebrated Eid with her family in London in 2015.

Speaking to the media, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed his happiness over the reunion, stating, "She is celebrating Eid with her family after almost ten years.

This is a positive and emotional moment for all of us." Khaleda Zia’s personal physician in London, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, also shared updates on her condition, saying, "Madam is much better now, Alhamdulillah. She is spending Eid at home with her family, and there is a lot of emotion surrounding this moment."

Khaleda Zia, who has been suffering from multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis, kidney problems, heart complications, diabetes, and arthritis, has been undergoing treatment in London since January.

She was flown to the UK in a royal air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and was initially admitted to The London Clinic under the supervision of Professor John Kennedy.

After 17 days of hospital care, she has been continuing her treatment at her son’s residence under the guidance of a medical board.

The former Prime Minister, who spent four Eids in prison and at the hospital during her incarceration in 2018 on corruption charges, extended Eid greetings to the people of Bangladesh and her party members.

Her release and subsequent travel to London for treatment came after years of legal and political battles.

Khaleda Zia’s Eid celebration with her family this year has been a rare moment of joy for the BNP leader, who has faced significant health challenges and political struggles in recent years.
