The 18th death anniversary of former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General K M Obaidur Rahman is being observed today.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued a message commemorating Obaidur Rahman's contributions to the Liberation War, various political movements, and the BNP.

Born on May 5, 1940, in Laskardia village, Faridpur, Obaidur Rahman was a prominent leader in student politics, serving as General Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and leading the anti-Ayub movement in 1962.

He was also elected president of East Pakistan Chhatra League in 1963 and played a crucial role in the non-cooperation movement during the 1971 Liberation War.

Rahman joined BNP in 1978, serving as a Member of Parliament and holding key ministerial positions, including Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, and Minister of Aviation and Tourism.

He was the Secretary General of BNP from 1986 to 1988 and continued to serve as a member of the BNP Standing Committee until his passing on March 21, 2007. He was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Nagarkanda, Faridpur.

In his tribute, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir remembered Obaidur Rahman as a respected national leader who played a pivotal role in strengthening and organizing the party.

Rahman’s daughter, Shama Obayed, currently serves as BNP’s Organizing Secretary.
