The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday expressed concern over the rising harassment and violence against women, urging the government to act swiftly to prevent extremism.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi condemned an incident where a man stopped rickshaws and questioned female students about their attire on International Women’s Day, calling it a sign of extremism.

He said that such acts cannot be tolerated.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan office, Rizvi said alarm over the rising incidents of violence against women, including eve-teasing, molestation, and sexual harassment.

He also said that women are facing insecurity on the streets and online, with growing impunity for the perpetrators.

Rizvi warned that extremism might be behind these acts, attempting to destabilize the country and strip women of their rights.

He called on the interim government to take strong action to suppress all forms of anarchy and ensure justice.

The BNP leader demanded strict punishment for those responsible for these crimes and stressed the moral responsibility to protect women’s dignity and freedom, which he said are their constitutional rights.
