A Bangladeshi man, Shahed Miah, 25, was shot dead by Indian Khasias at the Kanaighat border in Sylhet early Friday (March 7).
The incident took place near pillar number 1,319 in the Laijuri Baskona area when Shahed and several others reportedly crossed into Indian territory. A verbal altercation broke out between them and the Khasias, which escalated, leading to gunfire. Shahed died on the spot.
Following the incident, India's Border Security Force (BSF) took possession of the body and had not returned it as of 4:00 pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kanaighat Police Station Abdul Awal confirmed the matter.
He said that Shahed was shot dead by the Khasias and that BSF took his body.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is in talks with Indian authorities to bring back the body, he added.
