EC registers 5M new voters

Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Tuesday (Feb 4) said it has gathered data on 5 million new voters as part of its ongoing update process.

He shared this information with reporters at the Election Commission building in the capital.

According to him, a total of 4,970,388 new voters are being added, while the target was 6,189,000.

He said the voter exclusion rate until Monday was 2.44%, which represents those who could not register in previous years.

Meanwhile, the rate of new voters who will be eligible from January 1, 2026, is 1.45%. This brings the total increase to 3.9%. Additionally, 1,523,000 deceased voters have been removed from the list, he said.

However, the data is expected to change further by Wednesday, he included.

In response to a question, he said that excluded voters can still register directly at voter registration centers until April 11.

Online registration will also remain open beyond that date. Authorities will investigate any negligence by field officials to address the gaps, said EC secretary.

The number of female voters has increased in this update. Among the excluded voters, 1.4 million are male, while 1.6 million are female, he added.
