At least 63 people have lost their lives after a train derailed near Pukhrayan district in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh of India in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to the latest reports.
Fourteen coaches of the Patna-Indore express train have derailed around 5:00 am, reports the Indian Express.
Medical teams have been rushed to the site of the accident to attend to the injured.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has directed the DGP to personally monitor the relief operations from the spot.
“All hospitals in neighboring districts are activated. Private hospitals of Kanpur are put on alert to accommodate patients,” he said.
The officials are expecting the death toll to rise as the rescue operations are on the way.
“14 coaches of Indore-Patna exp derailed near Kanpur. We are yet to confirm the total number of casualties. Rescue operations are underway,” Anil Saxena, Indian Railways spokesperson said.
He also said that he is taking immediate measures to take measure of the situation. “Senior officials and medical team have been rushed to the spot; we are in contact with district officials.”
