The United Nations human rights office has reported that at least 1,760 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza while attempting to access humanitarian aid since late May, marking a sharp increase from figures published earlier this month.

Hospital sources told Al Jazeera that Israeli air strikes across the besieged enclave killed at least 44 people on Friday alone, as the Israeli army intensified its bombardment of Gaza City.

Thousands of residents remain trapped in the city with no safe routes to escape.

Among those killed on Friday was 15-year-old Kanan Bakr, who died when an Israeli strike hit a tent in Gaza City in the early morning hours. His grieving parents were seen mourning beside his body.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen. The territory’s Health Ministry said one more child died of starvation on Friday, bringing the total number of hunger-related deaths to 240, including 107 children.

Since the start of Israel’s military campaign, at least 61,827 Palestinians have been killed and 155,275 injured, according to Gaza health authorities.

Israel launched its offensive following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which killed an estimated 1,139 people inside Israel and saw more than 200 others taken captive.
