In one of the deadliest natural disasters to strike central Texas in recent memory, flash floods have claimed 51 lives, including 15 children, and left dozens missing.

The catastrophe unfolded on Friday, with Kerr County emerging as the epicenter of the devastation—43 people were killed and 27 children remain unaccounted for from Camp Mystic, a Christian youth camp nestled along the Guadalupe River.

The river surged over 26 feet in less than an hour, sweeping away structures, campers, and families as many slept. The scene at Camp Mystic was grim: bunk beds caked in mud, stuffed animals scattered, and personal belongings left waterlogged.

“The work continues, and will continue, until everyone is found,” vowed Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha.

Across the region, over 850 individuals have been rescued, and emergency crews remain engaged in active search operations. Governor Greg Abbott issued an expanded disaster declaration, emphasizing, “We will stop when the job is completed.”

Federal reinforcements, including Coast Guard units, have joined the mission. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed full federal support, while President Trump pledged coordination with local authorities.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service warn of more rainfall, potentially complicating rescue efforts. Torrential downpours may reach up to 10 inches in the already flooded zones.

Grief has rippled through families, especially those connected to the camp. Sisters Blair and Brooke Harber, aged 13 and 11, were among the confirmed casualties. Survivors have recounted harrowing tales—one teen was saved by clinging to barbed wire, while others found temporary refuge in trees.

At Notre Dame Catholic Church, a memorial mass is set for Sunday to honor the lives lost and those still missing. As search operations push forward, Texas stands united in its determination to bring every soul home.
