A United Nations analysis has found that only women and children were killed in at least 36 Israeli airstrikes on Gaza between 18 March and 9 April.
The report adds to growing international concern over the mounting civilian toll in Israel’s military campaign, which resumed following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement last month.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly condemned the strikes, saying: “If this is not barbarism, I ask you, what is it?”
Since Friday morning, Israeli attacks have killed at least 20 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. Officials there report that 1,542 people have been killed since Israel resumed military operations on 18 March.
The Health Ministry says the overall death toll in Gaza now stands at 50,912, with 115,981 wounded. The Government Media Office has offered a higher estimate, putting the death toll at over 61,700. It claims thousands remain trapped under the rubble and are presumed dead.
The current conflict erupted after Hamas launched a large-scale assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing 1,139 people and taking more than 200 others hostage, according to Israeli authorities.
Efforts to broker a renewed ceasefire have so far failed, as humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate across the Gaza Strip.
