Israeli forces launched a new ground assault on Rafah, southern Gaza, as the death toll from Israeli attacks on Saturday climbed to 24.

The assault follows a recent ceasefire proposal from Egypt and Qatar, which Hamas has reportedly agreed to.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that Israel had submitted a counter-proposal after Hamas' acceptance of the truce plan.

As Ramadan draws to a close, Palestinians in Gaza face another Eid al-Fitr under dire conditions, with limited food supplies due to Israel’s ongoing blockade.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that at least 50,277 Palestinians have been killed, with 114,095 injured in the conflict. Gaza’s Government Media Office has updated the toll to over 61,700, with many more presumed dead under the rubble.

The violence follows the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks, which killed 1,139 people in Israel and saw more than 200 taken captive.
