US President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States could take control of Ukraine’s power plants to ensure their security, according to White House officials.
The proposal was reportedly made during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday. However, Zelensky later clarified that only the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was discussed.
Following the conversation, Zelensky expressed optimism about achieving lasting peace this year, calling the discussion “positive.” Trump also described the call as “very good.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported that at least 10 people were injured in Russian airstrikes overnight. In Russia’s Saratov region, local officials confirmed a fire at an airfield following Ukrainian drone strikes.
Later today, senior military officers from around 20 countries are set to meet in the UK to discuss the potential deployment of a peacekeeping force in the event of a ceasefire.
