Shah Amanat steps up measures to prevent COVID-19 spread

Authorities at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram have ramped up preventive measures to curb the possible spread of COVID-19, following a rise in infections in neighbouring India and other countries.

Acting on instructions from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), airport officials have reinforced screening procedures and health protocols at key points within the terminal, especially at immigration and health desks.

Speaking to Banglanews, Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, Engineer (Public Relations) at Shah Amanat International Airport, said thermal scanners have been installed at the immigration area of the international arrival hall to monitor passenger temperatures without physical contact.

"A dedicated medical team is on standby to conduct health screenings of incoming passengers," he said.

In addition to temperature checks, airport staff have been directed to strictly enforce the use of face masks, particularly at sensitive areas within the terminal.

To support these efforts, officials have stockpiled adequate supplies of masks and gloves for health workers and frontline personnel. Public announcements and visual notices are also being used to raise awareness among travelers about COVID-19 prevention.

The renewed precautions come as India reports a surge in cases of the NB.1.8.1 sub-variant of the coronavirus. According to DGHS data, Bangladesh recorded 86 COVID-19 infections in April and May this year, with one death reported on June 5.

Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation and will take further steps if necessary.
