The Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election is set to be held in more than three decades on September 11, the university administration announced on Sunday (Aug 10).
Proctor and member secretary of the JUCSU election committee, Professor AKM Rashidul Alam, disclosed the schedule, marking a significant return to student representation at the university.
Alongside the announcement, the authorities published a draft voter list and a code of conduct for candidates.
Nomination forms will be available on August 18 and 19, with verification to follow. A draft list of candidates is set for release on August 25.
Campaigning will run from August 29 to September 9. Professor Md Moniruzzaman will serve as the chief election commissioner.
The JUCSU was established in 1972, with the first election held the same year. The last election took place in 1992, after which the student body remained dormant.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in a student-led uprising, demands for a JUCSU election intensified, with students staging human chains, protest marches, and hunger strikes on campus. The university administration eventually responded by fixing the election date.
In July, Dhaka University also announced the schedule for its own central students’ union election (DUCSU).
