A school teacher was shot by unidentified assailants in broad daylight in Khulna on Thursday (May 15) morning.

The victim, Dilip Kumar Sarkar, 55, acting headmaster of Teligati High School, was shot around 9:00 am near the Teligati Sardarpara Jame Mosque, when he was on his way to school.

Witnesses said two men wearing helmets and riding a motorcycle intercepted him and opened fire before fleeing the scene. A bullet struck Sarkar in the left leg.

Locals rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital (Khumec), where he is currently receiving treatment.

“He is out of danger,” said Prabir Kumar Mitra, Officer-in-Charge of Aranghata Police Station. 

The OC said, “Preliminary investigation suggests the attack may be connected to an ongoing land dispute or demands for extortion. We are investigating the motive and identifying the attackers.”

Police have launched a manhunt, and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed, according to officials.
